Florida Paralegal Certification – A Paralegal’s Story
Fort Lauderdale paralegal Lisa Bono obtained here Florida Paralegal Certification from Nova Southeastern University and celebrates her career as a paralegal and the difference it makes to others, working as she does for a personal injury law firm.
“It’s not something I sought out,” she says of her career. “It’s something that just kind of happened and I was good at it.” And she’s now giving something back to her profession as newly re-elected president of the Broward Chapter of the Paralegal Association of Florida. The state has 11 chapters in an active association that engenders a sense of community among paralegals as well as assisting in paralegal certification and other education programs through the Paralegal Association of Florida.
The PAF was established in 1976 and serves around 1000 paralegals in Floridaand Lisa Bono wants to improve paralegal standards for the Florida paralegal profession.
“We are going to be starting a mentoring program that matches up a seasoned, experienced paralegal with a paralegal student,” she said. She recognizes that a good paralegal education in only part of the answer towards making a good paralegal.
“They go through school and they get out and they don’t have the procedural experience they need and that’s very important,” she said.
Making the jump from paralegal to lawyer, a common practice in her profession, is something she said she wished she would have done previously but she remains happy and fulfilled in a profession she not only loves, but that she’s also contributing towards in terms of paralegal certification in Florida and other paralegal issues for the state.
